It’s just a thought – 2

What is the past? Is it not just a thought in the present moment? And what about the future? Is it not, also, just a thought in the present moment? How do we experience the past and the future if not as thoughts in the present moment?

Pause for a moment, take a deep breath, and observe yourself: “What am I thinking? Am I, in this moment, regretting the past or worrying about the future?” Whenever you catch yourself ruminating or anticipating, remember to say to yourself, “It’s just a thought. And I’m not my thoughts.” Take some gentle steps to reduce this time travel of the mind, and to be grounded in the here-now, the only real moment of choice-making and life-creation. Connect mindfully with this present moment, refocusing your attention on your breath, your body, on whatever you may be doing, paying detailed attention to the simplest things.

The place is here, and the time is now, so be here, now, and nowhere else and nowhen else. Right here. Right now. And by doing so you will be alleviating suffering, reducing anxiety, taking better care of yourself, and bringing more happiness and peace to the world.

“What is the past or the future if not a thought in the present?”

“It’s just a thought, and life, in this moment, is not this thought. Thoughts are not real. Thoughts are just thoughts. Thoughts think themselves. The thought of a thing is not that thing. The mind has a mind of its own. I am not my thoughts.”
