Living More Mindfully

Why should we practice mindfulness? Well, it’s because the practice of mindfulness leads us to live more mindfully, and a more mindful way of living enhances the quality of our lives: the unpleasant occurrences do not wound us as deeply or last as longer, and the pleasant ones are noticed sooner and enjoyed fuller.

The practice of mindfulness develops skills that allow us to see beyond what we normally see, and to see again those things that, with the passing of time, became invisible to us.

To live mindfully is to live noticing what is real; being aware of life as it is, not as we would like it to be. Living mindfully is to see who we really are, and also who we are not. It is living with the ability to notice the pleasant and the unpleasant, calmly resting in the knowing that both are inevitable and transitory. It is living with the power to be at peace with ‘what is,’ accepting and dealing with both the good and the bad that life gives us. It is living with the capacity to augment the space between stimulus and response, and choose health-enhancing responses rather than health-damaging reactions. It is living with the skill to pause, breathe, and ask, “What is called for now, in this moment?” It is to peacefully live in the knowing that everything is impermanent, that nothing lasts forever, and that transformation is the only constant in life.

The consistent practice of mindfulness meditation — the cultivation of moment-to-moment, non-judgmental awareness — helps develop a skill set that allows us to live more mindfully. With the regular practice of paying attention to the present moment, on purpose, and non-judgmentally, new qualities of mind arise, which reduce the physical, mental, and emotional wear-and-tear and enhance our overall well-being.

We practice mindfulness meditation in order to live more mindfully, and, in doing so, we not only live better lives, but also make the world a better place. With our peaceful presence, we become bringers of peace, and a blessing to every person we meet.
