It’s What I Do

I went to my week-long silent retreat thinking what I would like to get from it. I framed it as a time of spiritual detox and rehab. I knew it was going to be demanding, so I renewed my commitment to apply myself wholeheartedly in order to get the most out of it. And then it came to me that, in the final analysis, it didn’t matter so much what I thought I would do, or what I intended to do, or what I said I was going to do; what really mattered is what I actually did!

Actions really speak louder than words.

What was true for my retreat is also true for life. Good intentions that are not translated into action have no impact in enhancing the quality of life, one’s own and the lives of all other sentient beings. So, let us remember that every moment of awareness and clarity, of re-commitment to noble goals, and of right action is important.

May we have the strength to live mindfully. May we choose to be happy and bring happiness to others. May happiness be the chief-counselor for our decisions.

Since gratefulness is the key that opens the gates to the kingdom of happiness, it is always appropriate to express gratitude. I realize how fortunate and blessed I am. How many people in the world have a chance to attend a silent retreat? How many people in the world have a chance to take a long period of time off, go to a beautiful, secluded, and protected place where they are taken good care of, in order to work on their personal development? I am fortunate and blessed, and I am grateful.
