Acceptance, Peace and Tranquility

It is so ephemeral, so difficult to grasp, so difficult to describe… I am talking about the peace and tranquility that we experience when we accept ‘what is.’

It all begins when you heed the calling from your highest self. You envision a future where you are going to be doing what you have been called to do. You put yourself in motion to make your dreams and desires come true. But in order to experience peace and tranquility in the present moment, you must, as you follow your bliss, detach from the results; you must let go of the need to get the imagined results the way you have imagined them, and within the timeframe you have imagined.

Imagination is a divine resource. Use it. Nurture it. Stay with it. Imagine yourself doing what you are being called to do. Feel all the good feelings of having reached the destination such as happiness and a sense of accomplishment. Keep present in your imagination the images of you doing a lot of good to a lot of people by being who you truly are meant to be. Meanwhile, accept — more than accept — rejoice with ‘what is,’ whatever it may be. Be grateful for who you are, where you are, what you have, the people you are presently sharing your life with, and the experiences you are living. Accept everything and give thanks. More than accept, celebrate your current life with joyful enthusiasm!

Work everyday to create the life you are called to live, and to create the situation and obtain the means you need to express yourself fully and give your gift to humanity. But let go of the need to control the outcomes. As you respond to your highest calling, and work to bring about the life that will allow you to give your grandest contribution to the world, you must constantly remind yourself to accept life as it is, as it comes, and be happy, content and satisfied in the present moment.

This is the discipline. This is the practice. This is the challenge. Can you do it? How can you calmly accept the life you have, here, now?

First, make sure you are following your bliss. Make sure you are responding to your highest calling. Be authentic. As long as you find yourself on the right road, progressing toward the right destination, setbacks will be much more tolerable.

Second, remember who you are — who you really are — and what your true essence is. You are an eternal spiritual being having a temporary human experience. The awareness of who you really are immediately enhances your peace and tranquility. For instance, if you feel that you will not have enough time to bring about the life of your dreams during your lifetime, the awareness that you are an eternal spiritual being will shield you from despair. It will prevent anxiety to take hold of you. You will look at your life and say, “everything happened for a reason.” You will accept that all things come at the right time.

So, cherish your dreams and desires. Be grateful for them. Recognize that they give you direction and motivation. At the same time, make the best of the life you have right here, right now.

Look ahead into the future while staying with all your senses in the present. Can you do it? Yes, you can. Practice brings perfection. Continue practicing. It is not easy to gracefully balance the present and the future. It is not easy to juggle gratitude and desire. That’s why the peace and tranquility that exudes from acceptance is so ephemeral, so difficult to grasp. It is there one moment, but if you shift your attention away from the present and focus too much on the future, it dissipates. So, practice in order to achieve balance. Tend to both, present and future, in the right doses, otherwise that blissful tranquility may vanish.

They say that too much focus on the past brings about depression, and too much focus on the future brings about anxiety. That is true for some, but I think we can look at the past and choose to experience not depression but immense gratitude for everything we went through, for all the teachers life brought us, for all the lessons learned, for all the lives we were able to touch, and all the lessons we were able to teach. Let’s choose to look at the past with gratitude. And let’s choose to look at the future not with anxiety but with hope, confidence and a joyful feeling that we will soon be able to give the much we have to give. We are on our way to give our grandest contribution to the world. We are on your way to be all that we are meant to be, a great blessing to the Universe.

Do the good things you are called to do during our lifetime, accepting the perfection of your present situation, while hoping and working for an even better future. Do not get discouraged if you don’t get what you want within the timeframe you have imagined. Believe that eventually you will. Live with the belief that you have all the time in the world, and that you, sooner or later, will get to the precise destination the Forces of the Universe have reserved for you. Remember that, even if you may not think so, you already are where the Forces of the Universe want you to be. Remember that you are an eternal spiritual being, and if, for any reason, you don’t get to your desired destination during this life, you will eventually get there in the next, or the next, or the next. Calmly accept that if you don’t get there during this life it is because you are needed here, where you are right now, as you were needed wherever you may have been in the past, and wherever you may be in the future, to learn the lessons you need to learn and to teach the lessons you are supposed to teach. Realize that in the realm of the spiritual beings time is an illusion. You don’t need to rush. You have all the time in the world. You can slow down, relax, accept what is, and savor the present. You and I are eternal. We operate in eternity.

P.S. My good friend Jack, again and again, reminds me to stay in the present. He made a copy of the following passage from Eckhart Tolle’s book, The Power of Now, and gave it to me. “I have learned to offer no resistance to what is; I have learned to allow the present moment to be and to accept the impermanent nature of all things and conditions. Thus have I found peace.” ~ Eckhart Tolle
