Do They See Me?

Do they see me? The ones climbing this tree; do they see me? And the ones that tickle my knee; do they see me? And the ones journeying through this old wooden table in the garden; do they see me? And these ones I carefully avoid stepping on as I mindfully walk this labyrinth; do they see me? These ants, I mean; do they see me? And if they don’t, then what else is out there that I don’t see?

I wonder.

Songs as Faithful Companions

Joni Mitchell’s ability to carefully choose words to convey emotions is admirable. Two of her songs — Down to You and Shadows and Light — have been my faithful companions since my youth. I guess we are still together after all these years because as I change, I keep discovering something new in them. These are poignant chants that remind me of the impermanence of all things, that change is the only constant in life, that the pleasant does not exist without the unpleasant, and that good and bad, right and wrong, reside in all of us. Great wisdom through inspired, sublime poetry!

Down to you

(first and last strophes)

Everything comes and goes
Marked by lovers and styles of clothes
Things that you held high
And told yourself were true
Lost or changing as the days come down to you
Down to you
Constant stranger
You’re a kind person
You’re a cold person too
It’s down to you
It all comes down to you

Everything comes and goes
Pleasure moves on too early
And trouble leaves too slow
Just when you’re thinking
You’ve finally got it made
Bad news comes knocking
At your garden gate
Knocking for you
Constant stranger
You’re a brute you’re an angel
You can crawl you can fly too
It’s down to you
It all comes down to you

Shadows And Light

Every picture has its shadows
And it has some source of light
Blindness blindness and sight

The perils of benefactors
The blessings of parasites
Blindness blindness and sight

Threatened by all things
Devil of cruelty
Drawn to all things
Devil of delight
Mythical devil of the ever-present laws
Governing blindness blindness and sight

Suntans in reservation dining rooms
Pale miners in their lantern rays
Night night and day

Hostage smile on presidents
Freedom scribbled in the subway
It’s like night night and day

Threatened by all things
God of cruelty
Drawn to all things
God of delight
Mythical god of the everlasting laws
Governing day day and night

Critics of all expression
Judges in black and white
Saying it’s wrong saying it’s right

Compelled by prescribed standards
Or some ideals we fight
For wrong wrong and right

Threatened by all things
Man of cruelty-mark of Cain
Drawn to all things
Man of delight-born again born again
Man of the laws the ever-broken laws
Governing wrong wrong and right
Governing wrong wrong and right
Wrong and right

Walking at Omega, 2014

Ted DesMaisons is an instructor of the Mindfulness in Schools Project, and a great human being. I feel fortunate for having had him as one of those who prepared me to properly teach mindfulness for children and adolescents. What follows was written by him. Enjoy!

><><><><><

by Ted DesMaisons:

Simple summer moments can prove so sweet.

I just recently returned from a wonderful retreat at the Omega Institute with Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) luminaries Jon Kabat-Zinn and Saki Santorelli. We spent most of our time in the first few days engaged in mindfulness practice, cycling through sitting, walking, lying down and yoga meditations. Six AM to 9 PM, almost non-stop makes an endurance challenge, for sure, but it also brings a steadier mind and more open awareness. On one of our extended walking meditations, with 100 or so of us spread across one of Omega’s great lawns as the day’s light faded, the heart of the following poem came to me.

Here’s hoping the moment speaks to you as well.

. . . . .

Walking at Omega, 2014

We move over this open field like
early evening fireflies,
flickering lamps of awareness
in measured motion,
dancing with
the oncoming dark.

Each floats and pauses
under her own power;
Each honors his own track.
Still, we sense each other
in the soft periphery,
conjoined in pulsing multitude.

Surely, we are not alone.

Like any lights,
we, too, will someday extinguish,
falling into
that great darkness
which births
and swallows
all things.

For now, though
—in this moment—
let our hearts rest
in quiet reassurance,
this field of quiet fires
ever available
for those
who choose to see.

~ Ted DesMaisons

Early April Mornings in Athlone

Cold air and long shadows. Trees waking up after a long retreat. Fresh bulbs and little leaves decorating branches tired of fighting the winter winds. Pigeons and crows protecting their nests. A coming back to life.

And an infinite number of diamonds floating down the river Shannon, shining jewels that can only be seen in this present moment, but cannot be kept for later enjoyment, just like every single moment of our lives.

Muddy Shoes

By my friend Michelle Miller, Petaluma, 2/9/2017

Walking through the drizzle and mist

I come to a puddle in my path

It seems deep and I’m hesitant to wet my shoes

I might have plans for those later

I skirt the edges of the water as best I can

And am pleased when I emerge on the other side almost untouched

Enjoying the walk now, my pace quickens

And I look around

I feel my body moving through space

I really listen to the birds in the marsh

And I am awake

But there are more puddles up ahead

Deeper

I decide I will not let a little water stop me

And plunge ahead – first ankle deep

Then, taking a brave breath,

Jumping in with both feet,

Splashing, laughing

Striding ahead into my life

My journey continues with muddied shoes

But I am unsoiled

Two Teardrops

I once knew a little girl
Who opened her heart to me
She shed two teardrops
One of sorrow and one of glee

Teardrops, two
One for the loved one who was suffering
And one for her, ’cause his suffering made her suffer too

Teardrops, two
One for imagining that she wasn’t loved
And one when realizing that she was loved too

I once knew a little girl
Who generously opened her heart to me
She shed two teardrops
One of sorrow and one of glee
Two teardrops that touched me
And turned into three

Departing

It’s started

the time to leave once again approaches

and before the body has put on shoes

or opened the closed door

thoughts have already crossed the threshold

racing to their next destination

taking with them precious fragments

of experience here and now

Come back!

Come back!

and together we can savor the gifts

of each pulsating moment

We Are the Waters of the Great Sea

We are the waters of the Great Sea
Waves brought us here, to these shores
But here we cannot stay, except for a short while
We must return to where we came from
We are the waters of the Great Sea

Self-Fulfilling Prophecies

We are what we think. We create our lives and our world based on what we choose to think and believe. What we imagine in our minds is what we get in our lives.

When we start to observe and be more aware of our thoughts, we begin to understand what thoughts are. We begin to understand the thought process, how thoughts appear from nowhere, vanish, and reappear, and how one thought generates many other thoughts. Then we begin to realize that we have the power to be selective, and choose what thoughts we give your attention to. Once we realize that we can decide to give attention to thoughts, ideas, and beliefs that are beneficial to us, and disregard those that are not, our lives become immensely better.

The lives we imagine for ourselves are the lives we live. Our lives are self-fulfilling prophecies.

What possibilities do you see for yourself? What do you expect from your life? How do you see yourself in the future?

Remember that life is full of possibilities. You can be your own greatest motivator or your own greatest inhibitor; it is up to you. Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t, you are right.

><><><><

THINKING

If you think you are beaten, you are;
If you think you dare not, you don’t.
If you’d like to win, but you think you can’t,
It is almost a cinch that you won’t.

If you think you’ll lose, you’re lost;
For out of the world we find
Success begins with a fellow’s will
It’s all in the state of mind.

If you think you’re outclassed, you are;
You’ve got to think high to rise.
You’ve got to be sure of yourself before
You can ever win the prize.

Life’s battles don’t always go
To the stronger or faster man;
But sooner or later the man who wins
Is the one who thinks he can!

To Find the One I Lost

Why did you come here?

I came here to see vapors rising from the lake in these cold mornings. I came here to experience a long, silent, eye-to-eye connection with the young deer before the sun came up.

><

Why did you come here?

I came here to remind myself of the life I want to live: a mindful life in which I am awake, alert, aware, and joyfully alive. I came here to harness the courage to change and live this new, simpler life, free from all my fears, my addictions, my cravings, and my aversions.

><

Why did you come here?

I came here to immerse myself in the silence, absorb the peace of this place,  and feel happy, content, and satisfied.

><

Tell me: why did you come here, really?

I came here to find the one I lost.

That’s why.

That’s what I came here for.

~ Piero Falci

Omega Institute, June 2016

Usually, at the beginning of our retreats, we are asked questions such as, “Why did you come here? What has brought you here? Why are you here? What is your intention? What do you want to get from this experience?” After the first round of more obvious answers, we are asked again, and again, and again. “What do you really, really, really want?” and as we dig deeper, truer answers emerge.

The Generosity of Sharing One’s Pain

The Generosity of Sharing One’s Pain

Thank you for sharing your pain
And for taking me to that place I have prohibited myself from visiting
That place where my sadness resides

Thank you for sharing your pain
And for allowing me to shed tears with you
Not only for your suffering, but also for mine

Thank you for letting your pain out
And for revealing a escape route for my own
And for sharing your story, ‘cause it’s my story too
And for reminding me that, in the end
We are all the same on this never-ending journey of change

Thank you for sharing your pain
And for reminding me that although this being human is not easy
I can find great consolation in knowing that I am not alone
That, in the most silent of all silences, we hold each other in love
And that is enough
That is enough

A Dialogue of Self and Soul

I am content to follow to its source
Every event in action or in thought;
Measure the lot; forgive myself the lot!
When such as I cast out remorse
So great a sweetness flows into the breast
We must laugh and we must sing,
We are blest by everything,
Everything we look upon is blest.

Love After Love

The time will come when, with elation, you will greet yourself arriving at your own door, in your own mirror, and each will smile at the other’s welcome, and say, “Sit here. Eat.”

You will love again the stranger who was your self.

Give wine. Give bread. Give back your heart to itself, to the stranger who has loved you all your life, whom you ignored for another, who knows you by heart.

Take down the love letters from the bookshelf, the photographs, the desperate notes, peel your own image from the mirror.

Sit. Feast on your life.

An Epiphany of Oneness

An Epiphany of Oneness

I look around and see miracles. I look around and see Heaven. I look around and see the Garden and the Playground. I look around and see the Divine Presence everywhere, all around me, and in me. I am part of the whole. Actually I am not a part; I am the Whole. I am

I don’t exist isolated. Separation is an illusion. I am not this little, unconnected, and detached being that I thought I was. I am the Whole. I am

Only One exists. I am the Universe. I am the Immense One. I am the Whole. I am holy.  I am

Keeping Quiet

Now we will count to twelve
and we will all keep still.
For once on the face of the earth,
let’s not speak in any language,
let’s stop for a second,
and not move our arms so much.
It would be an exotic moment
without rush, without engines;
we would all be together
in a sudden strangeness.
If we were not so single-minded
about keeping our lives moving,
and for once could do nothing,
perhaps a huge silence
might interrupt this sadness
of never understanding ourselves
and of threatening ourselves
with death.
Perhaps the earth can teach us
as when everything seems dead in winter
and later proves to be alive.
Now I’ll count up to twelve
and you keep quiet and I will go.

Clearing

Do not try to save the whole world
or do anything grandiose.
Instead, create a clearing
in the dense forest of your life
and wait there patiently,
until the song that is your life
falls into your own cupped hands
and you recognize and greet it.
Only then will you know
how to give yourself to this world
so worthy of rescue.

The Invitation

BY ORIAH

It doesn’t interest me
what you do for a living.
I want to know
what you ache for
and if you dare to dream
of meeting your heart’s longing.

It doesn’t interest me
how old you are.
I want to know
if you will risk
looking like a fool
for love
for your dream
for the adventure of being alive.

It doesn’t interest me
what planets are
squaring your moon…
I want to know
if you have touched
the centre of your own sorrow
if you have been opened
by life’s betrayals
or have become shrivelled and closed
from fear of further pain.

I want to know
if you can sit with pain
mine or your own
without moving to hide it
or fade it
or fix it.

I want to know
if you can be with joy
mine or your own
if you can dance with wildness
and let the ecstasy fill you
to the tips of your fingers and toes
without cautioning us
to be careful
to be realistic
to remember the limitations
of being human.

It doesn’t interest me
if the story you are telling me
is true.
I want to know if you can
disappoint another
to be true to yourself.
If you can bear
the accusation of betrayal
and not betray your own soul.
If you can be faithless
and therefore trustworthy.

I want to know if you can see Beauty
even when it is not pretty
every day.
And if you can source your own life
from its presence.

I want to know
if you can live with failure
yours and mine
and still stand at the edge of the lake
and shout to the silver of the full moon,
“Yes.”

It doesn’t interest me
to know where you live
or how much money you have.
I want to know if you can get up
after the night of grief and despair
weary and bruised to the bone
and do what needs to be done
to feed the children.

It doesn’t interest me
who you know
or how you came to be here.
I want to know if you will stand
in the centre of the fire
with me
and not shrink back.

It doesn’t interest me
where or what or with whom
you have studied.
I want to know
what sustains you
from the inside
when all else falls away.

I want to know
if you can be alone
with yourself
and if you truly like
the company you keep
in the empty moments.

Sozinho

Às vezes no silêncio da noite
Eu fico imaginando nós dois
Eu fico ali, sonhando acordado
Juntando
O antes, o agora e o depois..

Porque você me deixa tão solto?
Porque você não cola em mim?
Tô me sentindo muito sozinho
Huuum!…

Não sou nem quero ser
O seu dono
É que um carinho as vezes
Cai bem
Eu tenho os meus
Desejos e planos
Secretos!
Só conto prá você
Mais ninguém…

Porque você me esquece
E some?
E se eu me interessar
Por alguém?
E se ela de repente me ganha?…

Quando a gente gosta
Claro que a gente cuida
Fala que me ama só
Que é da boca prá fora
Ou você me engana
Ou não está madura
Oh! Oh! Oh! Oh!
Onde está você agora?…(2x)

Não sou nem quero ser
O seu dono
É que um carinho as vezes
Cai bem
Eu tenho os meus
Desejos e planos
Secretos!
Só conto prá você

E se eu me interessar
Por alguém?
E se ela de repente me ganha?
Uh! Uh! Uh! Uh!…

Nananananá!

Nananana Nanannaá

Come to the Silence

And God said…

Come to the silence

Life is so loud

And your soul needs a break

From the clock and the crowd

Come to the silence

And let my love start

To heal all life’s hurts

And comfort your heart

Come to the silence

Be calm and be still

Just rest in my arms

For today, that’s my will

Come to the silence

In search of my peace

Gently your doubts and your fears

Will all cease

Come to the silence

Here, take my hand

Have you forgotten

That I understand?

The Real Work

It may be that when we no longer know what to do

we have come to our real work,

and that when we no longer know which way to go

we have come to our real journey.

For too long

For too long now I have confined myself. I haven’t touched the pebble, or laid my hands on the tree, or admired the colors of the feathers of the duck.

For too long now I haven’t seen you in the clouds, or in the reflections on the pond. I have not felt you in the morning breeze, or sensed you in the empty spaces.

For too long now I haven’t allowed the squirrels to look me in the eyes, or listened to what the birds had to tell me. I haven’t heard you in the whispers beyond the noises.

For too long now I have not felt you gently kissing my feet as I walk. I have not noticed the leaves dancing with the wind. I have not seen you in what is dying and what is being born, and reflected on the impermanence of all.

For too long now I have not seen you shining in the drops of water on the blades of grass.

I have not been paying attention.

I haven’t felt that you and I are one.

But today I am out again.

I am here, now

In ecstasy

With you

With me

The Dash

BY LINDA ELLIS

I read of a man who stood to speak
at the funeral of a friend.
He referred to the dates on the tombstone
from the beginning…to the end.

He noted that first came the date of birth
and spoke the following date with tears,
but he said what mattered most of all
was the dash between those years.

For that dash represents all the time
that they spent alive on earth.
And now only those who loved them
know what that little line is worth.

For it matters not, how much we own,
the cars…the house…the cash.
What matters is how we live and love
and how we spend our dash.

So, think about this long and hard.
Are there things you’d like to change?
For you never know how much time is left
that can still be rearranged.

If we could just slow down enough
to consider what’s true and real
and always try to understand
the way other people feel.

And be less quick to anger
and show appreciation more
and love the people in our lives
like we’ve never loved before.

If we treat each other with respect
and more often wear a smile,
remembering that this special dash
might only last a little while.

So, when your eulogy is being read,
with your life’s actions to rehash…
would you be proud of the things they say
about how you spent YOUR dash?

The Peace Of Wild Things

BY WENDELL BERRY

When despair grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting for their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

Who Am I When I Am Not?

1st Room – Karuna – Compassion

Who am I when I am not playing the character I have created?

Who am I when I am not imitating, impersonating, pretending?

Who am I when I am not trying to please or impress?

Who am I when I am not obsessing with what to say and the right words to use?

Who am I when I not striving to be perfect, wanting to be someone I am not?

2nd Room – Shanti – Calmness

Who am I when I am not thinking about what I like and dislike, what I approve and disapprove, what I want and don’t want?

Who am I when I am not wanting life to match my expectations, wishing the world and people in it to be as I would like them to be?

Who am I when I am not daydreaming pleasant fantasies, or daymaring scary dramas?

Who am I when I am not plotting how to satisfy my cravings?

3rd Room – Bhodi – Awakening

Who am I when I am neither the one who is being observed, nor the one who observes?

Who am I when I am not who I think I am?

Who am I and who am I not?

Who am I and who am I not, really?

What remains after all that I think I am is gone?

Beyond all Rooms

Who am I beyond all the ideas I have about myself?

What continues to exist after all that is I, and all the ideas I have about this I cease to exist?

What persists when the I disappears?

What remains after all that is I vanishes?

Who am I beyond the I?

Who is the I beyond the I?

What is beyond?

6/15/2016 – Omega Institute, Rhinebeck, NY.

The genesis of this poem:

Today, Saki Santorelli, one of the instructors of the mindfulness retreat I am attending recited David Whyte’s “Enough,” a poem that I love very much, and that has been a companion in my life for many years now. He said, “David wrote this poem during a silent retreat when he was instructed, just as you were, not to write.” After a pause, Saki added, “Well, I guess that, actually, he was not writing; he was listening.” Well, I, too, listened to the words of this poem in the middle of the silence. What emerged and became evident during these days of silence was not so much my true self but my many false selves; not so much who I am, but much more who I am not. So, it made me ponder: “Who am I when I am not who I think I am?” At the end of the retreat, Saki mentioned that he was pondering on that question, and it made me think how we affect each other’s lives in unexpected ways. I am very grateful for the entire retreat experience, and deeply touched by the generosity of the instructors and participants.

1/15/2017 – IMS – Insight Meditation Society, Barre, MA.

This poem came to me, again, during a silent retreat at the Insight Meditation Society on January of 2017. Originally, I divided it in three free-form strophes and simply gave a number to each (1, 2, 3). More recently, I have been reflecting that although the use of the term would not be rigorously correct, I could refer to each part as a stanza (the word means room, in Italian. See the definition of the term below). And since every morning during this last week I walked through the corridors that give access to the bedrooms of Karuna (Compassion), Shanti (Calmness) and Bhodi (Awakening), the three dormitories at IMS, sounding the bell in the early hours of the day to wake up the retreatants, I felt called to include those names in this poem as a way of reminding me to honor this journey we are in.

><><><><

Stanza – In poetry, a stanza (from Italian stanza, “room”) is a grouped set of lines within a poem. Stanzas can have regular rhyme and metrical schemes, though stanzas are not strictly required to have either. The term stanza is similar to strophe, though strophe is sometimes used to refer to irregular set of lines, as opposed to regular, rhymed stanzas.

I Tried to Know Myself

For years, copying other people, I tried to know myself.
From within, I couldn’t decide what to do.
Unable to see, I heard my name being called.
Then I walked outside.

The breeze at dawn has secrets to tell you.
Don’t go back to sleep.
You must ask for what you really want.
Don’t go back to sleep.
People are going back and forth across the doorsill
where the two worlds touch.
The door is round and open.
Don’t go back to sleep.

Come With Me To The Land Of We

1

I feel your pain. I am in pain too. I feel your anger. I am angry too. I feel your despair ’cause I’m in despair too. You don’t need to hurt me ’cause your wound is open in me. Let us leave it all behind.

Come with me to the Land of We.

rain sun rainbow

2

Remind me of all the times I’ve hurt you. Tell me about the times I’ve excluded you, and made you feel defenseless and afraid. Help me see how heartless and violent I am. Show me all the pointless and petty wars I am constantly waging. You’re hurting and I’m too. Yes, hurt people hurt people, but we can forgive each other and be free. Help me! Heal me!

Take me to the Land of We.

3

Twists of fate took us to different places; I ended up sitting on a cushion, and you, with a rifle in your hands. I could easily be you, and you could easily be me. I see myself in you. Can you see yourself in me? Yes, I am in you, and you are in me. I belong to you, and you belong to me. I need you, and you need me. Hold my hand, and let me hold yours. Fill my void, and I will fill yours. Let us melt our loneliness and despair in the warmth of this embrace. Let us cultivate kindness in a new place. Let us walk together slowly, gently to where there is no you or me.

Let’s go together to the Land of We.

~ Piero Falci

I heard the news of the shooting and deaths in the Orlando nightclub while attending a mindfulness meditation retreat in a place of peace and beauty called Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, New York, a real example that it is possible to bring Heaven to Earth. On the early morning hours of Monday, June 13, 2016, the instructors told us about the tragedy. We meditated, walked in silence, and afterwards many of the participants shared their thoughts in what came to be a highly emotional moment. I thank all of those who expressed their feelings in such heartfelt ways, especially Andrew and Audrey.

I am convinced that we need to silently and reverently go inside ourselves to that peaceful place of wisdom. I am commited to spread peace through practicing and teaching the inner work that will heal this world.

Believe it… Heaven is here, if we want it to be.

For a New Beginning

In out-of-the-way places of the heart,
Where your thoughts never think to wander,
This beginning has been quietly forming,
Waiting until you were ready to emerge.

For a long time it has watched your desire,
Feeling the emptiness grow inside you,
Noticing how you willed yourself on,
Still unable to leave what you had outgrown.

It watched you play with the seduction of safety
And the grey promises that sameness whispered,
Heard the waves of turmoil rise and relent,
Wondered would you always live like this.

Then the delight, when your courage kindled,
And out you stepped onto new ground,
Your eyes young again with energy and dream,
A path of plenitude opening before you.

Though your destination is not clear
You can trust the promise of this opening;
Unfurl yourself into the grace of beginning
That is one with your life’s desire.

Awaken your spirit to adventure;
Hold nothing back, learn to find ease in risk;
Soon you will be home in a new rhythm
For your soul senses the world that awaits you.

Is it True? Is it Necessary? Is it Kind? – 2

Is It True? Is It Necessary? Is It Kind?

Oh! Stay, dear child, one moment stay,
Before a word you speak,
That can do harm in any way
To the poor, or to the weak;
And never say of any one
What you’d not have said of you,
Ere you ask yourself the question,
“Is the accusation true?”

And if it is true, for I suppose
You would not tell a lie;
Before the failings you expose
Of friend or enemy:
Yet even then be careful, very;
Pause and your words well weigh,
And ask if it be necessary,
What you’re about to say.

And should it necessary be,
At least you deem it so,
Yet speak not unadvisedly
Of friend or even foe,
Till in your secret soul you seek
For some excuse to find;
And ere the thoughtless word you speak,
Ask yourself, “Is it kind?”

When you have ask’d these questions three—
True,—Necessary,—Kind,—
Ask’d them in all sincerity,
I think that you will find,
It is not hardship to obey
The command of our Blessed Lord,—
No ill of any man to say;
No, not a single word.

May the sound of this bell penetrate deep into the cosmos

The End of Suffering

The Great Bell Chant

May the sound of this bell penetrate deep into the cosmos
Even in the darkest spots
Living beings are able to hear it clearly
So that all suffering in them ceases
Understanding comes to their hearts
And they transcend the path of sorrow and death.

The universal dharma door is already open
The sound of the rising tide is heard clearly
The miracle happens
A beautiful child appears in the heart of a lotus flower
One single drop of this compassionate water
Is enough to bring back the refreshing spring to our mountains and rivers.

Listening to the bell
I feel the afflictions in me begin to dissolve
My mind calms
My body relaxes
A smile is born on my lips

Following the sound of the bell
My breath brings me back to the safe island of mindfulness
In the garden of my heart
The flowers of peace bloom beautifully.

The Silence

Though the air is full of singing, my head is loud with the labor of words.

Though the season is rich with fruit, my tongue hungers for the sweet of speech.

Though the beech is golden, I cannot stand beside it mute, but must say, ‘It is golden,’ while the leaves stir and fall with a sound that is not a name.

It is in the silence that my hope is, and my aim.

A song whose lines I cannot make or sing sounds men’s silence like a root.

Let me say and not mourn: the world lives in the death of speech and sings there.

Parenting – If I Had My Child to Raise Over Again

If I Had My Child to Raise Over Again

If I had my child to raise over again,

I’d finger paint more, and point the finger less.

I’d do less correcting, and more connecting.

I’d take my eyes off my watch, and watch with my eyes.

I would care to know less, and know to care more.

I’d take more hikes and fly more kites.

I’d stop playing serious, and seriously play.

I’d run through more fields, and gaze at more stars.

I’d do more hugging, and less tugging.

I would be firm less often, and affirm much more.

I’d build self-esteem first, and the house later.

I’d teach less about the love of power,

And more about the power of love.

It matters not whether my child is big or small,

From this day forth, I’ll cherish it all.

Welcome and entertain all visitors

This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they are a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.

Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.

Keep digging your well

In the early morning hour,
just before dawn, lover and beloved wake
and take a drink of water.

October 18

She asks, “Do you love me or yourself more?
Really, tell the absolute truth.”

He says, “There’s nothing left of me.
I’m like a ruby held up to the sunrise.
Is it still a stone, or a world
made of redness? It has no resistance
to sunlight.”

This is how Hallaj said, I am God,
and told the truth!

The ruby and the sunrise are one.
Be courageous and discipline yourself.

Completely become hearing and ear,
and wear this sun-ruby as an earring.

Work. Keep digging your well.
Don’t think about getting off from work.
Water is there somewhere.

Submit to a daily practice.
Your loyalty to that
is a ring on the door.

Keep knocking, and the joy inside
will eventually open a window
and look out to see who’s there.

Autobiography in Five Short Chapters

Here’s a story I’ve heard… Every morning, while sitting in the porch of his farmhouse, the man would watch his cows leave the barn and go to the pastureland for grazing. He noticed that they always took the same path to get there: a turn to the left, a turn to the right, another turn to the left through the woods, and a final turn to the right. Day in, and day out, the cows would walk the same tortuous path, over and over again. One night, there was a huge storm, and many trees came down, revealing a much straighter and shorter path to the pastures. He imagined that the cows would notice how much easier it would be to go directly from the barn to the grazing fields. But rather than taking the more direct route to the feeding grounds, he witnessed that the cows continued to use the same old path as before.

When I think about this story, I immediately think about us, human beings, and how set and inflexible we are in our behaviors, just like the cows in the tale. And I ponder, “Yes, old habits die hard.”

……..

Mindfulness allows us to see ourselves and our behavioral patterns more clearly. With practice we become better able to observe our thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations, and also see our habitual, conditioned, repetitive reactions to the challenging situations in life. We notice how we react when someone pushes our buttons, and how we behave during certain difficult interactions. We become aware of our choices to fight, freeze, or flee, and realize when we have been aggressive, passive, or assertive.

The jewel of the mindfulness practice is that it gives us more control over our lives, control to enhance the space and time between stimulus and response, control to choose the wisest responses, all of which enhances the quality of our lives and our overall well-being. We realize that we can choose, and that we do not have to always follow the same path. We can choose different ones.

……..

Autobiography In Five Short Chapters

Chapter I

I walk down the street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk
I fall in.
I am lost… I am helpless.
It isn’t my fault.
It takes me forever to find a way out.

Chapter II

I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I pretend I don’t see it.
I fall in again.
I can’t believe I’m in the same place.
But it isn’t my fault.
It still takes a long time to get out.

Chapter III

I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I see it is there.
I still fall in…it’s a habit
My eyes are open.
I know where I am.
It is my fault.
I get out immediately.

Chapter IV

I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I walk around it.

Chapter V

I walk down another street.

Oneness

I have been thinking of the difference between water and the waves on it. Rising, water’s still water, falling back, it is water; will you give me a hint how to tell them apart?

Because someone has made up the word ‘wave,’ do I have to distinguish it from water?

The Substance You Taste

maroon bells

The sky-wheel turns us into dawn
and fills creation again with color.

Let it be our weakness, this thirst-love
for the world, the sun coming up
like red-gold being poured!

The potter’s wheel moves,
and shapes change quickly

Let the jar I am becoming
turn to a wine cup
Fill me with your love
for being awake.

I’m no hypocrite renunciate.
Call me this delicious substance
you taste when you create new beauty.

Be strong, Hafiz!
Work here inside time,
where we fail, catch hold
again, and climb.

Khwāja Shams-ud-Dīn Muḥammad Ḥāfeẓ-e Shīrāzī, known by his pen name Hafez (1325/26–1389/90), was a Persian poet who “laud[ed] the joys of love and wine [but] also targeted religious hypocrisy.” His collected works are regarded as a pinnacle of Persian literature and are to be found in the homes of most people in Iran, who learn his poems by heart and still use them as proverbs and sayings. ~ from the Wikipedia article

Tell me about your despair, yours, and I will tell you mine

You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
For a hundred miles through the desert, repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves.

Tell me about your despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.

Meanwhile the world goes on.
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
are moving across the landscapes,
over the prairies and the deep trees,
the mountains and the rivers.

rain_and_sun_orchid

Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
are heading home again.

Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting —
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.

Nowhere to Go

Nowhere to go
(I have arrived already)
Nowhere to go
(I have arrived already)

Wherever I may be
There’s my home, my home
No matter where I am
Here’s my home, my home

Roaming roads without direction
At the mercy of my cravings and avertions

Nowhere to go
(I have arrived already)
Nowhere to go
(I have arrived already)

Wherever I may be
There’s my home, my home
No matter where I am
Here’s my home, my home

Giving up the senseless race
Finding peace at my slow pace
Moving inward, moving within
Here, inside, where it all begins

Nowhere to go
(I have arrived already)
Nowhere to go
(I have arrived already)

Wherever I may be
There’s my home, my home
No matter where I am
Here’s my home, my home

Need not go elsewhere. Need not go anywhere.

Nowhere to go
(I have arrived already)
Nowhere to go
(I have arrived already)

Wherever I may be
There’s my home, my home
No matter where I am
Here’s my home, my home

Need not go anywhere. All I need is everywhere.

Purification and liberation from human misery.

Heaven is here, if we want it to be.

I Said To The Wanting-Creature Inside Me

Don’t waste your whole life chasing dreams. Don’t go through life desiring to have what you don’t have, to do what you aren’t doing, and to be who you are not, imagining that only then you will know fulfillment and happiness. Stop wanting the world to be different than what it is, and others to be different than who they are.

Tame the wanting creature inside yourself.

Find a good balance between your desires and the appreciation of who you are, what you do, and what you have. Live happily in the here-now, accepting all that is, and grateful for all the gifts that were given to you and that are at your disposal in the present moment.

Mindfulness leads to gratefulness, and gratefulness leads to happiness.

“Just throw away all thoughts of imaginary things, and stand firm in that which you are.”

///

I said to the wanting-creature inside me:
What is this river you want to cross?
There are no travelers on the river-road, and no road.
Do you see anyone moving about on that bank, or nesting?

There is no river at all, and no boat, and no boatman.
There is no tow rope either, and no one to pull it.
There is no ground, no sky, no time, no bank, no ford!

And there is no body, and no mind!
Do you believe there is some place that will make the
soul less thirsty?
In that great absence you will find nothing.

Be strong then, and enter into your own body;
there you have a solid place for your feet.
Think about it carefully!
Don’t go off somewhere else!

Kabir says this: just throw away all thoughts of
imaginary things,
and stand firm in that which you are.

~ Kabir, 15th-century Indian mystic

Be who you really are, and do what you have been called by the Universe to do. Be mindful. Be grateful. This is how you achieve real happiness.

You Must Let It Find You

“Midway along the journey of our life
I woke to find myself in a dark wood,
for I had wandered off from the straight path.”

~ Dante Alighieri, Inferno

LOST

A young Indian asks an older member of the tribe “What do I do when I am lost in the forest?” The elder responds:

“Stand still. The trees ahead and the bushes beside you are not lost. Wherever you are is called Here, and you must treat it as a powerful stranger, must ask permission to know it and be known. The forest breathes. Listen. It answers, ‘I have made this place around you, if you leave it you may come back again, saying Here. No two trees are the same to Raven. No two branches are the same to Wren. If what a tree or a bush does is lost on you, you are surely lost. Stand still. The forest knows where you are. You must let it find you.’”

~ David Wagoner

><><><><

“Lost” by David Wagoner is a very popular poem. I first saw it in “The Heart Aroused: Poetry and the Preservation of the Soul in Corporate America” by David Whyte, a poet himself, whose work deeply influenced me. Poetry has the power to wake us up and bring our consciousness to a higher level.

Be Positive Anyway

Thank you for teaching me about the getting and giving attitudes, and for taking me to reflect on the truth contained in the words of the Prayer of Saint Francis, “It is in giving that we receive.”

><><><><

“How ungrateful you are! This is a free event, with free food and drinks, and a free venue with air-conditioned, table and chairs. You didn’t pay anything to attend. Why do you complain? Why do you criticize? Why, instead of focusing on what you consider wrong, don’t you choose to look at everything that is right? Why, instead of uttering words of criticism, don’t you choose to praise and thank the organizers who have put their own resources, their time, work, effort and money into creating the event? You are a guest, invited to someone else’s home. How dare you criticize the hosts? How ungrateful you are! Show some gratitude. If you don’t have anything good to say, don’t say anything.”

><><><><

Come with an attitude of gratitude, grateful to those who have offered a beautiful and comfortable venue to be used for free, grateful for the work others have done to organize the event, and for the time and money they have spent. Don’t complain. Don’t come to criticize and find fault. Come with a desire to help. And if you feel that things aren’t good enough — if you see something that can be improved — take it upon yourself to do it. Think about the work others have done, and volunteer to do something yourself. Give your contribution.

Thank you for teaching me about the getting and giving attitudes, and for taking me to reflect on the truth contained in the words of the Prayer of Saint Francis, “It is in giving that we receive.”

When you feel the urge to react, take a deep breath and let go. Recognize that the need to fight, the need to defend and attack, the need to prove that you are right, all those needs stem from the ego. You don’t need to engage in any battle. Let go.

The verses below reportedly were written on a wall of Mother Teresa’s home for children in Calcutta, India, and are widely attributed to her. Some sources say that the words below were written on the wall of Mother Teresa’s own room. In any case, their association with Mother Teresa and the Missionaries of Charity has made them popular worldwide, expressing as they do, the spirit in which they lived their lives. They seem to be based on a composition originally by Kent Keith, but much of the second half has been re-written in a more spiritual way. Both versions are shown below.

Mother-Teresa-Quotes

1. This is the version that was found written on a wall of Mother Teresa’s home for children in Calcutta:

People are often unreasonable, irrational, and self-centered.
Forgive them anyway.

If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives.
Be kind anyway.

If you are successful, you will win some unfaithful friends and some genuine enemies.
Succeed anyway.

If you are honest and sincere people may deceive you.
Be honest and sincere anyway.

What you spend years creating, others could destroy overnight.
Create anyway.

If you find serenity and happiness, some may be jealous.
Be happy anyway.

The good you do today, will often be forgotten.
Do good anyway.

Give the best you have, and it will never be enough.
Give your best anyway.

In the final analysis, it is between you and God.
It was never between you and them anyway.

~ this version is credited to Mother Teresa

><><><><

2. The Original Kent M. Keith’s Version:

The Paradoxical Commandments

People are illogical, unreasonable, and self-centered.
Love them anyway.
If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish ulterior motives.
Do good anyway.
If you are successful, you win false friends and true enemies.
Succeed anyway.
The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow.
Do good anyway.
Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable.
Be honest and frank anyway.
The biggest men and women with the biggest ideas can be shot down by the smallest men and women with the smallest minds.
Think big anyway.
People favor underdogs but follow only top dogs.
Fight for a few underdogs anyway.
What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight.
Build anyway.
People really need help but may attack you if you do help them.
Help people anyway.
Give the world the best you have and you’ll get kicked in the teeth.
Give the world the best you have anyway.

~ Kent M. Keith

“The Paradoxical Commandments” were written by Kent M. Keith in 1968 as part of a booklet for student leaders.

If

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream—and not make dreams your master;
If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools:

IMG_2406

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son!

The Overcoat

I think.

I have memories.

I have desires.

I exist.

I am.

Who am I? What exactly is this “I?”

I think I know who I am, but the “I” that I am is certainly more than my body — or the many bodies I’ve been in. It has to be so because although the “I” is the same, the body keeps changing. As I look back at my life and think about it, my “I” has inhabited many bodies: the body of a newborn, a toddler, a child, a teenager, a young adult, and of an old man now. I ask myself, “Where are the bodies that I once occupied?” They don’t exist anymore. But I am still here. The “I” persists without those physical bodies.

I have recently learned that there isn’t a single cell in my body right now that was there seven years ago. I am dying all the time. Looking from another angle, I realize that while some cells are dying, other cells are being born. We are not only dying; we are also being born again and again. Both processes are taking place at the same time: death and birth. I keep dying and being born again.

Thinking about my final physical death, within this framework, I realize that death is not such a big deal: it is just one more death in the stream of deaths. I believe that the “I” that has persisted without the bodies it has once occupied, will still persist even without the physical body I may be ‘wearing’ at the time of my final death.

As my friend Bob once told me, “My body is just an overcoat. That’s all it is. When I got it, it was new and beautiful. The fabric was immaculate and soft. As years went by, it started to show some ‘wear and tear.’ It got dirty, and with time it came to  a point where I wasn’t able to wash the stains off anymore. The fabric lost its glow, and I couldn’t get rid of the wrinkles. Some holes started to show up. The overcoat lost some buttons, and I just went on wearing it without them. It will reach a point where it will be beyond repair. And then the time will come when I will have to throw the overcoat away because I will not be able to wear it anymore.”

overcoat

A lot of the pain and suffering we experience in life is due to our over-identification with self. But we have to come to the understanding that the “I” is just a construct of our minds, a concept that we have created, and that, as the Buddha has warned us, “nothing is to be clung to as I, me, or mine.”

My friend Leslie, who had a near-death experience, tells that when she left her physical body she experienced an exuberant feeling of freedom. She tells that “the  feeling of freedom was combined with a deeper feeling of peace than I have ever known before or since…and exuberance/joy… And love. And the love was visible as the most beautiful white light imaginable. I was surrounded by love in the form of light. And I was in my true home.” She explains that in that moment she felt expansive, light, free, and realized how dense, heavy, and constricting the body was. Dying was, for her, a liberating and joyful experience. It was like removing a heavy overcoat. She says that although not comparable in magnitude, dying produces a feeling somewhat similar to taking off every single piece of clothing that may be bothering and constricting us after a long day of hard work, and going skinny dipping. It is a liberating and joyful feeling! She affirms that there’s no need to be afraid of death.

Sailing to Byzantium
W. B. Yeats, 1865 – 1939

That is no country for old men. The young
In one another’s arms, birds in the trees
—Those dying generations—at their song,
The salmon-falls, the mackerel-crowded seas,
Fish, flesh, or fowl, commend all summer long
Whatever is begotten, born, and dies.
Caught in that sensual music all neglect
Monuments of unageing intellect.

An aged man is but a paltry thing,
A tattered coat upon a stick, unless
Soul clap its hands and sing, and louder sing
For every tatter in its mortal dress,
Nor is there singing school but studying
Monuments of its own magnificence;
And therefore I have sailed the seas and come
To the holy city of Byzantium.

O sages standing in God’s holy fire
As in the gold mosaic of a wall,
Come from the holy fire, perne in a gyre,
And be the singing-masters of my soul.
Consume my heart away; sick with desire
And fastened to a dying animal
It knows not what it is; and gather me
Into the artifice of eternity.

Once out of nature I shall never take
My bodily form from any natural thing,
But such a form as Grecian goldsmiths make
Of hammered gold and gold enamelling
To keep a drowsy Emperor awake;
Or set upon a golden bough to sing
To lords and ladies of Byzantium
Of what is past, or passing, or to come.

The Prayer of Saint Francis

Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace;

Where there is hatred, let me sow love;

Where there is injury, pardon;

Where there is error, truth;

Where there is doubt, faith;

Where there is despair, hope;

Where there is darkness, light;

And where there is sadness, joy.

SSPX0049

O Divine Master,

Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled, as to console;

To be understood, as to understand;

To be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive;

It is in pardoning that we are pardoned;

And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

A little bit of history… The Prayer of Saint Francis is a Catholic Christian prayer. It is widely but erroneously attributed to the 13th-century saint Francis of Assisi. The prayer in its present form cannot be traced back further than 1912, when it was printed in Paris in French, in a small spiritual magazine called La Clochette (The Little Bell), published by La Ligue de la Sainte-Messe (The Holy Mass League). The author’s name was not given, although it may have been the founder of La Ligue, Fr. Esther Bouquerel. For those interested, a professor at the University of Orleans in France, Dr. Christian Renoux, published a study of the prayer and its history in French in 2001. The prayer has been known in the United States since 1927 when its first known translation in English appeared in January of that year in the Quaker magazine Friends’ Intelligencer (Philadelphia), where it was attributed to St. Francis of Assisi.

My personal take on all this?

My feeling is that the Universe conspired for these powerful words to be associated with the figure of Saint Francis of Assisi, thus empowering them to reach and touch more people.

A Bend in the Road

When we feel we have nothing left to give and we are sure that the song has ended,

When our day seems over and the shadows fall and the darkness of night has descended,

Where can we go to find the strength to valiantly keep on trying?

Where can we find the hand that will dry the tears that the heart is crying?

There’s but one place to go, and that is to God, and dropping all pretense and pride,

We can pour out our problems without restraint and gain strength with Him at our side.

DSCN0745

And together we stand at life’s crossroads and view what we think is the end,

But God has a much bigger vision, and He tells us it’s only a bend,

For the road goes on and is smoother, and the pause in the song is a rest,

And the part that’s unsung and unfinished is the sweetest and richest and best.

So rest and relax and grow stronger.

Let go and let God share your load.

Your work is not finished or ended.

You’ve just come to a bend in the road.

Desiderata

Go placidly amidst the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons.

Speak your truth quietly and clearly, and listen to others, even the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexatious to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.

Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love, for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.

Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune, but do not distress yourself with dark imaginings; many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here.

And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be.

And whatever your labors and aspirations in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace with your soul.

With all its shams, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world.

Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

The Optimist Creed

Promise yourself

To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind

To talk health, happiness, and prosperity to every person you meet

To make all your friends feel that there is something worthwhile in them

To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true

To think only of the best, to work only for the best and to expect only the best

To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are.about your own

To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future

To wear a cheerful expression at all times and give a smile to every living creature you meet

To give so much time to improving yourself that you have no time to criticize others

IMG_1386

To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble

To think well of yourself and to proclaim this fact to the world, not in loud word, but in great deeds

To live in the faith that the whole world is on your side, so long as you are true to the best that is in you

I Am

I was regretting the past
and fearing the future.
Suddenly God was speaking:
“My name is I Am.”

I waited and God continued:
“When you live in the past,
with its mistakes and regrets,
it is hard.
I am not there.
My name is not I Was.”

“When you live in the future,
with its problems and fears,
it is hard.
I am not there.
My name is not I Will Be.”

“When you live in this moment,
it is not hard.
I am here.
My name is I Am.”
