Our lives are constantly beginning, again and again. Every moment is a new moment, the first moment of the rest of our lives, and the only one that really exists, the only one during which we can affect the quality of our lives by the choices we make. All that happens, when it happens, happens in the present moment. Whatever happened in the past, when it happened, happened in the present moment. And whatever will happen in the future, when it happens, will also happen in the present moment. The past and the future are nothing more than thoughts in the present moment.
We must practice diligently and do our best to tame the tendency of our minds to roam and get lost in time and space. This wandering habit of the mind gets in the way of capturing the good of each present moment because it hinders our ability to be fully present in the here-now, noticing all the beauty that surrounds us.
Knowing that a good life is a collection of good moments, let us do our best to be present, noticing and taking in those moments, with all their magic, mystery, and miracles.
Let us not only notice those good moments that come about spontaneously, but let’s also create good moments on purpose. Let’s ask ourselves, “What brings me joy? And how can I populate my days with more of the things, people, activities, and places that bring me joy?” Let’s create those joyful moments intentionally and more often and then pause, giving ourselves all the time necessary to savor them, enjoy them, absorb them completely, and record them in our minds.
Let us remember to be mindful, and to allow ourselves to be amazed, grateful, and optimistic. Let us make of this and every moment the best it can be, knowing that this is the recipe for creating fulfilling and happy lives!
Let us realize and remember that today — and every day — is a special day. Today is the first day of the rest of our lives. Let’s make it count. Let’s be present and enjoy it!
