Do What You Like And Like What You Do

Create a list of the activities you enjoy doing, and populate your days with them. Try to do as many of them as you can every day, even if just for a short period of time. Remember that one minute counts. It may be one mindful breath, one mindful body stretch, or one mindful expression of gratitude and kindness. It may be as simple as taking a few steps outside in nature, watching the sunrise, or feeling the breeze on your skin. It may be hiking in the mountains, riding your bike, or catching a wave. It may be adding just a few sentences to the book you’re writing, playing just a few chords of the song you’re learning to play on your guitar, or adding just a few touches to the watercolor you’re painting. It may be simply exercising, meditating, or giving yourself permission to rest and relax. It may be taking time to listen to music you like, or calmly read that book you have always wanted to read but have repeatedly put aside, imagining that a better time to peruse it would soon come. It may be contacting your friends to tell them how much you appreciate them, or, even better, creating opportunities to hang out with them. It may be going out and serving those in need. Whatever it may be – whatever enhances the enjoyment of your life — go ahead and do it. And since there’s not enough time to do them all, do at least a little bit of one of the things you enjoy. And if the conditions are not there to do them perfectly, do them imperfectly. Just do them anyway, today and every day! Create the life you want to live. Don’t wait any longer. Life is short.

On the Train from Tours to Paris

4:44

on a train from Tours to Paris

on a foggy afternoon

Imagining how caring and loving,

and gentle and sweet she may be

the woman in black

in her simple yet refined elegance

on the train to Paris

on the train to Paris

on this cold, gray, shadowless afternoon

A humming, silent sound that invites sleepiness

and dreams and fantasies

and dreams and fantasies

and the desire for a long, warming hug

and the soothing scent of a woman in love

the one in black

on the train to Paris

on the train to Paris

on this cold, gray, shadowless afternoon

Just wandering thoughts

impermanent as they all are

appearing and vanishing

like the sights on the window of this train to Paris

the train to Paris

on this cold, gray, shadowless afternoon

Our Lives Are Constantly Beginning

Our lives are constantly beginning, again and again. Every moment is a new moment, the first moment of the rest of our lives, and the only one that really exists, the only one during which we can affect the quality of our lives by the choices we make. All that happens, when it happens, happens in the present moment. Whatever happened in the past, when it happened, happened in the present moment. And whatever will happen in the future, when it will happen, will also happen in the present moment. The past and the future are nothing more than thoughts in the present moment.

We must practice diligently and do our best to tame the tendency of our minds to roam and get lost in time and space. This wandering habit of the mind gets in the way of capturing the good of each present moment because it hinders our ability to be fully present in the here-now, noticing all the beauty that surrounds us.

Knowing that a good life is a collection of good moments, let us do our best to be present, noticing and taking in those moments, with all their magic, mystery, and miracles.

Let us not only notice those good moments that come about spontaneously, but let’s also create good moments on purpose. Let’s ask ourselves, “What brings me joy? And how can I populate my days with more of the things, people, activities, and places that bring me joy?” Let’s create those joyful moments intentionally and more often and then pause, giving ourselves all the time necessary to savor them, enjoy them, absorb them completely, and record them in our minds.

Let us remember to be mindful, and to allow ourselves to be amazed, grateful, and optimistic. Let us make of this and every moment the best it can be, knowing that this is the recipe for creating fulfilling and happy lives!

Let us realize and remember that today — and every day — is a special day. Today is the first day of the rest of our lives. Let’s make it count. Let’s be present and enjoy it!

Cheers!
