From Silence to Peace

Every now and then I remember that peace comes from silence.

We should all cultivate healthy periods of silence and solitude in our lives. Great discoveries and insights come from these moments. And I believe the world would be a lot better if we all learned to meditate and if we all unplugged for a while.

Mother Teresa’s recipe for peace is five lines long. Guess what? It starts with silence.

The fruit of silence is prayer.
The fruit of prayer is faith.
The fruit of faith is love.
The fruit of love is service.
The fruit of service is peace.

~ Mother Teresa

The fruit of silence is prayer. What kind of prayer? A silent prayer, a prayer in which we do not speak, just listen, a prayer that puts us in touch with our inner wisdom.

This silent observation — which we call meditation — allows us to see the intelligence of the Universe in action which, in turn, develops in us a calm acceptance that life is unfolding exactly as it should. From this acceptance, what grows in us is trust, optimism, hope, and faith that everything is OK and will be OK.

This faith opens up our hearts to love: to receive and give love. We develop the ability to see all the beauty, all the magic, all the mystery, and all the miracles that surround us. We notice the abundance of the Universe, and we realize how loved we are, how fortunate we are. We realize that there’s more than enough for everybody, that we always had enough and will always have enough, and therefore we don’t need to worry about not having enough. We develop a grateful heart, a heart of love.

This opening up to love moves us from selfishness to selflessness. We become less self-centered and more other-centered. We don’t ask “What’s in it for me?” as much as we did before, and begin asking “How can I help?” a lot more. We begin to serve others, to give, soon realizing that it is in giving that we receive.

We then open up our arms,  look up to the skies, smile, and whisper a silent “Thank you” to the Source of All. And then we rest in great peace.

The fruit of silence is prayer.
The fruit of prayer is faith.
The fruit of faith is love.
The fruit of love is service.
The fruit of service is peace.

Think about it. Think about how your life would be with more silence, prayer, faith, love, service, and peace in it. Awesome, right? So what are you waiting for? Don’t wait. Just do it!
