With another hurricane approaching I can feel the fear furtively creeping in. Influenced by all the upheaval and insanity around me, I notice myself momentarily lost in a world of worries and fears, imagining the worst that may happen. And, sadly, I feel myself diminishing, becoming small.
But then, I pause, breathe, and ask myself, “What is the worst that can happen? Is it to lose my house, my belongings, my loved ones, or even my life?” And suddenly I remember that sooner or later, all this will be gone, because nothing lasts forever. This remembrance brings me peace. It wakes me up, and makes me reflect on what is really important in life.
Suddenly, this clear and present danger becomes a blessing in disguise. It brings about the opportunity to put things in perspective. It helps me develop acceptance of ‘what is,’ whatever it may be. It gives me the impetus to expand, rather than contract. It propels me to move beyond my petty self-centered worries, and present myself to be of service to others. It offers me the opportunity to be big instead of small.
Yes, there is a storm coming in the distance, but there is also one much closer, right inside my head. The good thing is that I have developed the power to calm this one.
We are bringers of peace and sanity during moments of turmoil. It is in moments like this one that our peaceful presence is needed, and I thank you because I know you have dedicated yourself to reach this calm state and be this sane and wisdom-exuding presence.
In a boat full of fearful and agitated people, one sane, calm, and steady-minded person can find the way through the fog and storms, and take the boat to a safe harbor, saving not only his or her life, but also everyone’s lives.
The world desperately needs more steady-minded individuals.
