Do They See Me?

Do they see me? The ones climbing this tree; do they see me? And the ones that tickle my knee; do they see me? And the ones journeying through this old wooden table in the garden; do they see me? And these ones I carefully avoid stepping on as I mindfully walk this labyrinth; do they see me? These ants, I mean; do they see me? And if they don’t, then what else is out there that I don’t see?

I wonder.

It’s just a thought

What is the past? Is it not just a thought in the present moment? And what about the future? Is it not, also, just a thought in the present moment?

Pause for a moment, take a deep breath, and observe yourself: “What am I thinking? Am I, in this moment, regretting the past or worrying about the future?”

Whenever you catch yourself ruminating or anticipating, remember to say to yourself, “It’s just a thought.” Take some gentle steps to reduce this time travel of the mind, and to be grounded in the here-now, the only real moment of choice-making and life-creation. Connect mindfully with this present moment, refocusing your attention on whatever you may be doing, paying detailed attention to the simplest things. The place is here, and the time is now, so be here, now. And by doing so you will be reducing anxiety, taking better care of yourself, and bringing more happiness and peace to the world.

What is the past or the future if not a thought in the present?

Remember: “It’s just a thought, and life, in this moment, is not this thought.”

Remember: “Thoughts are not real!”

Today

I feel that you need to hear this again…

Today is not just another day.

Today is a special day.

Today is the first day of your new life.

Wake up! Are you listening?

You have the power to make today different from all other days.

Choose to make today a remarkable day.

Be creative and bold.

Take risks.

Do something new. It doesn’t have to be grand.

What are you waiting?

Remember…

Today is a special day.

Today is the first day of your new life.

……..

See simplicity in the complicated.
Achieve greatness in little things.
In the universe the difficult things are done as if they are easy.
In the universe great acts are made up of small deeds.
The sage does not attempt anything very big, and thus achieves greatness.

~ Tao-Te-Ching

Know that You Are Loved and Love Yourself

I feel that you need to hear this again:

I love you.

You have no idea of how much I love you.

You have no idea of how many people love you.

You have no idea of how much you are loved.

You were, are, and always will be immensely loved.

My love for you is not conditional.

I love you regardless of anything.

I love you anyway.

I love you just the way you are.

I want you to be happy, and knowing that you are happy makes me happy.

So, stop with all the nonsense.

Have some self-compassion.

Accept the forgiveness and the love that were given to you.

Forgive yourself as you already have been completely forgiven.

Know that you are loved, and love yourself today.

And God said “Love Your Enemy,” and I obeyed him and loved myself. ~ Kahlil Gibran

The Hurricane and Me

With another hurricane approaching I can feel the fear furtively creeping in. Influenced by all the upheaval and insanity around me, I notice myself momentarily lost in a world of worries and fears, imagining the worst that may happen. And, sadly, I feel myself diminishing, becoming small.

But then, I pause, breathe, and ask myself, “What is the worst that can happen? Is it to lose my house, my belongings, my loved ones, or even my life?” And suddenly I remember that sooner or later, all this will be gone, because nothing lasts forever. This remembrance brings me peace. It wakes me up, and makes me reflect on what is really important in life.

Suddenly, this clear and present danger becomes a blessing in disguise. It brings about the opportunity to put things in perspective. It helps me develop acceptance of ‘what is,’ whatever it may be. It gives me the impetus to expand, rather than contract. It propels me to move beyond my petty self-centered worries, and present myself to be of service to others. It offers me the opportunity to be big instead of small.

Yes, there is a storm coming in the distance, but there is also one much closer, right inside my head. The good thing is that I have developed the power to calm this one.

><

Calming the Storm

We are bringers of peace and sanity during moments of turmoil. It is in moments like this one that our peaceful presence is needed, and I thank you because I know you have dedicated yourself to reach this calm state and be this sane and wisdom-exuding presence.

><

In a boat full of fearful and agitated people, one sane, calm, and steady-minded person can find the way through the fog and storms, and take the boat to a safe harbor.

Practice mindfulness.

The world desperately needs more steady-minded individuals.

Living More Mindfully

Why should we practice mindfulness? Well, it’s because the practice of mindfulness leads us to live more mindfully, and a more mindful way of living enhances the quality of our lives: the unpleasant occurrences do not wound us as deeply or last as longer, and the pleasant ones are noticed sooner and enjoyed fuller.

The practice of mindfulness develops skills that allow us to see beyond what we normally see, and to see again those things that, with the passing of time, became invisible to us.

To live mindfully is to live noticing what is real; being aware of life as it is, not as we would like it to be. Living mindfully is to see who we really are, and also who we are not. It is living with the ability to notice the pleasant and the unpleasant, calmly resting in the knowing that both are inevitable and transitory. It is living with the power to be at peace with ‘what is,’ accepting and dealing with both the good and the bad that life gives us. It is living with the capacity to augment the space between stimulus and response, and choose health-enhancing responses rather than health-damaging reactions. It is living with the skill to pause, breathe, and ask, “What is called for now, in this moment?” It is to peacefully live in the knowing that everything is impermanent, that nothing lasts forever, and that transformation is the only constant in life.

The consistent practice of mindfulness meditation — the cultivation of moment-to-moment, non-judgmental awareness — helps develop a skill set that allows us to live more mindfully. With the regular practice of paying attention to the present moment, on purpose, and non-judgmentally, new qualities of mind arise, which reduce the physical, mental, and emotional wear-and-tear and enhance our overall well-being.

We practice mindfulness meditation in order to live more mindfully, and, in doing so, we not only live better lives, but also make the world a better place. With our peaceful presence, we become bringers of peace, and a blessing to every person we meet.
