From Mindfulness to Happiness

This is no Desiderata and I am no Max Ehrmann. If you want something more poetic, there’s where you should go. But what I am presenting here are what I believe to be the elements of the happiness formula, the steps on the path to happiness, the way to get there… or here, if you understand me.

Here it is:

Be mindful. Be amazed. Be grateful. Be content. Be optimistic.  Be compassionate. Be generous.  Be happy.

><><><><

Be mindful. Be mindful of all the beauty that surrounds you. Be mindful of the infinite possibilities that are always available for you. Be present in this moment, right here, right now, not lost in thoughts, ruminating the past and anticipating the future with unnecessary worries. Since in the final analysis a good life is a collection of good moments, extract all the good you can of each and every present moment. Be awake, alert, and aware, in order to be fully and joyfully alive. Don’t allow the past unhappiness, and the pursuit of an imagined future happiness, to be the sources of your present unhappiness. Again, don’t ruminate and don’t anticipate. Be here, now.

Be amazed. Be amazed with all the magic, mystery, and miracles that surround you. Cultivate a patient, childlike curiosity. Cultivate the eyes of a tourist, the mind of a beginner, the boldness of an explorer, the inquisitiveness of a scientist, the attentiveness of an investigator. See beyond what you see. Look with the eyes of the body and see with the eyes of the heart. Feel the breeze, and watch the leaves and branches dancing with the wind. See the reflections on the pond, and the shining sparks on the surface of the water. See things as you’ve never seen them before. Be aware of the eternal and the transient. Notice the permanence and impermanence of all. Nothing lasts forever. Know that in the physical form neither you nor anyone else will last forever. Know that what is bad will not last forever, nor what is good. Everything changes. Everything passes. So do not get too attached to anything or anyone, not even your loved ones, your body, your ideas about yourself, or even the idea that a thing called “self’ exists. Learn to release and let go of everything.

Be grateful. Be grateful for all the gifts that were freely given to you. Be grateful for the life you have, for the adventure you are living.

Be content. Be content and satisfied with your share, with all that was given to you. Don’t compare yourself with others. There will always be people who are, who do, and who have more than you, as well as people who will be, do, and have less than you. Stop comparing. You are not less than anyone else; nor more. You are you. Be yourself. Be who you are. Be authentic and genuine. Be humble. Try not to judge and condemn.

Be optimistic. Be optimistic, hopeful, and positive. Trust that everything in the Universe is unfolding as it should, and better things and situations are always coming your way. Remember to look at the biggest possible picture always, and see that what seems very significant, actually is not. Look at your own experience and see that many of the things you thought were good and wanted, turned out to be bad, and many of the things you didn’t want turned our to be good. Cultivate a great sense of humor.

Be compassionate. Develop empathy, and try to see and feel as others see and feel. Decide to do something to make someone else’s life better. Be kind, patient, forgiving, gentle, and loving. Be fair, just, and honest.

Be generous. Give. Give. Give. Give love. Give of yourself — your time and undivided attention — to others. Give them your shoulder to cry. Be of service to others. Be kind. Listen. Be a peacemaker, a bringer of peace, a promoter of peace.  Be at peace with others and with yourself. Be gentle with others and with yourself. Do not demand too much nor be too harsh with yourself. Relax and enjoy.

and, by doing all this, day in and day out, you will…

Be happy!

From Silence to Happiness

Remember! Remember! Remember!
It is not difficult to be mindful.
What is difficult is to remember to be mindful.

A path from Silence to Happiness

Here’s an invitation… Pause for a moment, come to the here-now, and try to reflect on the following components to see how they work together to produce a state of happiness.

Befriending the silence. Cultivating stillness. Enjoying solitude. Staying mindfully in the here-now, awake, aware, alert, and alive. Paying attention. Coming back to this moment, over and over again, and realizing it always is a new moment, and the only moment. Cultivating a childlike curiosity, a beginner’s mind. Refraining from comparing, categorizing, criticizing, judging, and condemning. Observing. Exploring. Noticing. Investigating. Looking with tourist’s eyes, and seeing more, seeing beyond what you see, seeing with the eyes of the heart. Discovering magic, mystery, and miracles everywhere, and finding the sacred in the secular. Appreciating, enjoying, and admiring the gifts that were freely given to you, and experiencing a state of awe, amazement, wonderment, ecstasy, and reverence. Experiencing joy, delight, elation, bliss, euphoria, and exultation. Recognizing the blessings, and acknowledging the abundance. Developing a sense of gratefulness, and hosting a feeling of contentment and satisfaction. Discovering your purpose and following your bliss. Accepting the call of Life, and courageously launching yourself into the adventure.  Putting yourself in motion. Letting go and letting be. Cultivating inexhaustible hope and optimism. Remaining open to outcomes, no matter how unexpected they may be. Trusting that everything is unfolding as it should. Remembering that nothing lasts forever; everything changes all the time. Finding perfection in the present situation. Refraining from striving. Being gentle with yourself, and knowing when to demand less from yourself. Living with ease by practicing simplicity, humility, authenticity, honor, and honesty. Developing tenderness, solidarity, and love. Taking action to serve and give. Being generous, patient, gentle, and kind with others. Developing strong, meaningful, deep, high quality relationships. Giving people your full, undivided attention. Laughing and bringing laughter to others. Deciding to be happy, and, finally, experiencing happiness!

The 9 Ls

Look, Listen, Learn, Lead, Laugh, Love, Live, Leave, and Let go.

Look deeply. Listen attentively. Learn unceasingly. Lead compassionately. Laugh unboundedly. Love profusely. Live fully. Leave an honorable legacy, and Let go of everything.

Loving Much, Living Gently, and Letting Go

We have many teachers in our lives, don’t we? In a way, we are all teachers for one another, teaching and learning all the time, right?

Some time ago, I had a special day when I received important messages from three of my teachers.

Here’s the invitation I received from one of them, Florencia Clement De Grandprey:

“So, this entire week I’m practicing “letting go”…letting go of many things: letting go of feelings that don’t serve me, of people who want my time and attention but aren’t willing to give me theirs, of judgement because it’s not my job, of impatience because everything happens when it is supposed to, of the past because I’m here now, of worry because despite what I’d like to think, I don’t have control on pretty much anything…and a biggie for me, letting go of outcomes. I’m really trying not to be attached to the outcome. I have to trust that the outcome will be perfect however it may look…I must focus on the now and not on what might be in the future, mainly, because I must be willing to accept failure and not only success. Maybe if I’m not attached to the outcome, I can just enjoy the process…kind of like baking a cake and having a blast while making it even if it might come out looking completely different from the pretty picture in the recipe book. So, will you join me in my practice this week? What will you be letting go of?”

Before I could reply, I was blessed by the words of another teacher of mine, Millie Pochet. She wrote:

“My beautiful friend Florencia Clement De Grandprey reminds me, in her wisdom, that the full moon is a great time for letting go. I will practice letting go of judgement, for it is not mine to make, letting go of control, for it only ruins the fun and enjoyment of the present, letting go of attachments, for they only lead to suffering, particularly letting go of attachment to outcomes and attachment to my story, for the process is perfect and bliss is in releasing into the dance of life and flowing with whatever presents… Allowing you to be reinventing with every breath. Letting go of situations that no longer serve my joy. What would you let go of?”

What I found interesting is what Elizabeth Velez, another dear teacher, asked me that same morning. (I had a surgery, and, at that time, I couldn’t walk.)

“What is the lesson that the Universe is trying to teach you through your recent foot surgery? What is this condition of not being able to walk freely trying to teach you?”

Pondering.

“In the end, only three things matter: how much you loved, how gently you lived, and how gracefully you let go of things not meant for you.” ~ Buddha (I am not sure the Buddha ever said this; I would have to check. Anyway, it is a good piece of wisdom, and, for sure, he is known for teaching the importance of letting go, so, for now, I’ll just let go.)

Let Go of Your Ego’s Need to Be Right

Do you want to be right, or do you want to be happy?

Why do we engage in arguments, and get so upset? Why do we let these emotions get a hold of us? Can’t we see the ugly egos at play? Can’t we feel our egos craving to be right?

I’ve heard that sometimes it is better to be kind than to be right. We do not need an intelligent mind that speaks, but a patient heart that listens.

Do you want to be right, or do you want to promote understanding and peace?

Let go of the need to be right, because, in the final analysis, winning or losing does not matter; it’s no big deal.

Don’t engage in the fight. Ignore the attack. And if you can’t resist, then write down a message with all you want to say — vent it all out — but don’t send it; keep it for yourself.

If you feel the need to engage, make sure you are strong enough to do so with patience, kindness, and nonviolence.

Listen. Listen more and speak less. Be compassionate. Try to empathize and understand. Seek first to understand, then to be understood.

What you see is not what they see. What they see is not what you see. What we call reality is modified by one’s beliefs. We look at the same and see different. We have to be sensitive to this fact.

Do not hold so steadfastly to your views, opinions, and beliefs. Remain open.

Do not oppose force with force. Do not oppose negative feelings with negative feelings. Do not respond to negative words with negative words. Do not react to insults with insults.

Do not hold on to grudges. Your hatred will only consume you, no one else. Let it go. Offer no opposition to those who upset you, and the negativity will dissipate.

Be kind. Your softness will soften your opponent too. No need to defend. No need to attack. Just make sure that even if you cannot agree, you can deeply feel that the love that unites is bigger than any views that may divide.

Peace and love will strengthen all relationships.

Peace and Love.

To be kind is more important than to be right. Many times what people need is not a brilliant mind that speaks, but a special heart that listens.

~ Piero
