To Love Myself

As part of the Eat for Life course — a program aimed at enhancing health and quality of life through mindfulness and mindful eating — I recently participated in an exercise that brought about one of the most revealing insights I have ever had.

I was invited to think about negative things I say to myself about my body. Working with a partner, I was instructed to write down a negative statement that I constantly repeat to myself in my internal dialogues (my ‘old tapes,’ as the course calls them), such as, “I am out of shape, my body is flabby, and my belly is pathetic. I must exercise daily and make better choices regarding what I eat and drink.”  Then, I was instructed to read the statement out loud. Finally, it was my partner’s turn to repeat to me what I had just said. When I heard her say, “You are out of shape, your body is flabby, and your belly is pathetic, and you must exercise daily and make better choices regarding what you eat and drink,” I felt a rush of indignation and rage invade my body. Although absolutely conscious that I was participating in an exercise, I still felt, “How can she say such harsh things about me? Who does she think she is to talk to me like that? How dare she? This is so unkind!”

And then the realization hit me… This is what I do all the time. This is the way I talk to myself all the time. This is the abusive way I treat myself all the time. I am my own worst critic. I say the most hurtful things to myself, things that I would never even consider saying to anyone else. I criticize myself harshly all the time. I use the most demanding tone. And I do all this without any compassion, kindness, or consideration for my feelings.

Wow! What a revelation that was!

><><><><

In my philosophical/spiritual ponderings I say to myself that I came here to Earth — and was given this life — to learn some lessons, the most important being to grow in selflessness. I wholeheartedly believe that I came here to learn to be less selfish and more unselfish. But after the awakening that took place with this exercise, I am now considering that an equally important lesson that I need to learn is to be kind and gentle with myself, and to love myself just as I am.

I am now beginning to understand, in a much more profound way, something that I thought I already knew: that if I am unable to love myself fully and totally, I will never be able to love anyone else. I am beginning to realize that if I don’t accept myself as I am, I will live my life criticizing not only myself, but everything and everyone else, wanting the world to be different than it is, and that, definitely, is a pitiful way to waste a lifetime.

Wow!

I am always in awe with the the fact that learning has no end.

Muddy Shoes

By my friend Michelle Miller, Petaluma, 2/9/2017

Walking through the drizzle and mist

I come to a puddle in my path

It seems deep and I’m hesitant to wet my shoes

I might have plans for those later

I skirt the edges of the water as best I can

And am pleased when I emerge on the other side almost untouched

Enjoying the walk now, my pace quickens

And I look around

I feel my body moving through space

I really listen to the birds in the marsh

And I am awake

But there are more puddles up ahead

Deeper

I decide I will not let a little water stop me

And plunge ahead – first ankle deep

Then, taking a brave breath,

Jumping in with both feet,

Splashing, laughing

Striding ahead into my life

My journey continues with muddied shoes

But I am unsoiled

Contemplation on No-Coming, No-Going

This body is not me.
I am not limited by this body.
I am life without boundaries.
I have never been born,
and I have never died.

Look at the ocean and the sky filled with stars,
manifestations from my wondrous True Mind.

Since before time, I have been free.
Birth and death are only doors through which we pass,
sacred thresholds on our journey.
Birth and death are a game of hide-and-seek.

So laugh with me,
hold my hand,
let us say good-bye,
say good-bye, to meet again soon.

We meet today.
We will meet again tomorrow.
We will meet at the source every moment.
We meet each other in all forms of life.

Two Teardrops

I once knew a little girl
Who opened her heart to me
She shed two teardrops
One of sorrow and one of glee

Teardrops, two
One for the loved one who was suffering
And one for her, ’cause his suffering made her suffer too

Teardrops, two
One for imagining that she wasn’t loved
And one when realizing that she was loved too

I once knew a little girl
Who generously opened her heart to me
She shed two teardrops
One of sorrow and one of glee
Two teardrops that touched me
And turned into three

Forty-Nine Years Without Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Forty-nine years ago, the voice of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was silenced by an act of violence. I keep thinking how much he influenced me. He has been a guiding light in my life. For sure I admire his courage, his determination, his capacity to endure suffering without retaliating. I certainly admire him for always acting with the utmost civility, for exemplifying active nonviolent resistance, and for being able to bring the exchange of ideas about human rights to the highest intellectual level. But the characteristic I admire the most in Dr. King was his ability to see. As someone who is able to foresee the beautiful butterflies that eventually will come out of the ugliest caterpillars, he was able to see fragile and gentle human beings even inside the nastiest bullies. He was able to see the best of humanity inside everyone. He was able to see himself in others. He was able to see the Promised Land.

On April 3, 1968, one day before his death, Dr. King gave his famous “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” speech. Referring to the death threats he was receiving, he said, “Well, I don’t know what will happen now. We’ve got some difficult days ahead. But it really doesn’t matter with me now, because I’ve been to the mountaintop. And I don’t mind. Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I’m not concerned about that now. I just want to do God’s will. And He’s allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I’ve looked over, and I’ve seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you, but I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the Promised Land! And so I’m happy, tonight. I’m not worried about anything. I’m not fearing any man! My eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord!”

How I wish we all could see as he saw. How I wish we all remembered him and the sacrifices he made. How I wish we all imitated him, trying our best to be the best we can be.

Here’s to you, Martin, my brother, hero of humanity, architect of peace, the greatest American who ever lived!

Departing

It’s started

the time to leave once again approaches

and before the body has put on shoes

or opened the closed door

thoughts have already crossed the threshold

racing to their next destination

taking with them precious fragments

of experience here and now

Come back!

Come back!

and together we can savor the gifts

of each pulsating moment

The Hero’s Journey: Separation, Initiation, Return

“Let yourself be silently drawn by the strange pull of what you really love. It will not lead you astray.” ~ Rumi

The Hero’s Journey can be divided in three major parts: Separation, Initiation, and Return.

So, here is our future hero, living the “normal life,” living all his many predetermined roles, doing pretty much what everyone else does, doing what is expected of him, wanting the same things everyone else wants, working hard, consuming a lot, trying to fit in, be admired and loved, and hardly ever questioning anything. In his heart, every now and then, he may feel that he is not living the life he was called to live, but the pressures of the culture around him keep him doing the same things over and over again. He remains mostly unaware of his potential, of possibilities, of his options in life, living as if he is hypnotized, constantly distracted, and somewhat numb. Although internally he may feel that he is not doing what he came here to do — or being who he came here to be — he refuses to accept the Universe’s Call to Adventure. He does not feel he is ready or capable of facing the challenges.

And, then, suddenly, something happens; a loss of wealth, health, or relationships. He loses his job, his money, his house, or a loved one. He faces a break-up or a divorce. He gets sick and loses vitality.  These are prime moments when the hero wakes up. He can’t stay any longer. He has to go! And so, maybe reluctantly, he answers the Call to Adventure, and does what the Universe is summoning him to do. This is what Joseph Campbell called The Separation.

Then a new phase begins. Joseph Campbell called it, The Initiation. That is the adventure itself. It is time now for the hero to let go of lives that have played themselves out and do not serve him anymore.  He needs to let go of his past, his attachments, his identities, his personae, and the stories he tells about himself. It is time for him to put himself in motion to answer the calling. It is time to question all beliefs, letting go of some, keeping others, and adding new ones. It is a time of self-discovery. It is a time for honestly answering the four fundamental questions: “Who am I? What do I love? How shall I live knowing that I will die? What gifts do I bring to share with others?” It is a moment for removing the masks and living with authenticity. It is a time to become aware of the big illusion we are immersed in. It is a time to face the challenges, despite all self-doubts and insecurities. It is time for the hero to follow his bliss, knowing that if he does so, the Universe will open doors for him where there were only walls. And it is also during this phase that teachers and helpers show up.

><><><><

“I seek courage to live — this day. Courage to strike out on a path I have never trod before, courage to make new friends, courage to yield myself to the full power of the dream.”

~ Howard Thurman

><><><><

And after the hero lives his adventure, he returns, forever changed. Joseph Campbell called this phase, The Return.  He is now much more peaceful, selfless, compassionate, tolerant, content, and grateful. He becomes a blessing to all who come in contact with him.
