Inflicting pain on someone else will not ease anyone’s suffering.
Renounce violence. Don’t inoculate the virus of hatred in your children. Don’t give them a poison that you know will stay with them until they die. Surely you don’t want to do this to your children. Free them from the curse of having to carry hatred in their hearts for the duration of their lives. Liberate them from this lifetime curse. Give them a better future. Do something different. Be the one who brings about real change.
If you are one of those more closely connected with the killing, be it by manufacturing or trading weapons, or by directing others to use them, or, even, by actively using them, consider doing something else. Consider getting another job. Consider dropping your weapons. Consider speaking up against violence and becoming a powerful agent of change. Consider dedicating yourself to end oppression and exploitation, and create conditions for everyone to have safe, hopeful, healthy, dignified existences. Consider engaging in the work of bringing Heaven to Earth.
If you are fighting, if you are in the business of violence, aggression, and war, PLEASE, STOP. Drop your weapons! Do not kill. Life is sacred.
In what came to be known as the First Letter to the inhabitants of Corinth , Paul, the apostle, wrote the following: “Surely you know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit lives in you! God will destroy anyone who destroys God’s temple. For God’s temple is holy, and you yourselves are his temple.”
For those of us who are not directly involved in wars, let us, with compassion in our hearts, direct our thoughts to the children who have lost loved ones, those who have been wounded, those who have lost hope. Let us try to empathize with them. Let us try to feel their pain, even knowing that this will never be possible. Let us pause for a moment and realize that we, indirectly, also support the violence that creates so much pain and suffering throughout the world. Let us realize that we benefit from the structural violence that oppresses and exploits so many around the world. Let us consider that we, for remaining passive and not actively opposing it, have consented in having others perpetrate violence on our behalf.
Yes, it is understandable that we may choose to ignore the harsh reality, and sedate ourselves with all sorts of distractions. It is understandable our desire to protect ourselves from all this madness, and do what we can to shut our minds from being affected by this sad state of affairs. But digging holes in the ground and sticking our heads into them to avoid seeing and feeling the pain that is going on around us has never worked and never will.
The time has come to lower our shields and allow our hearts to be pierced by the arrows that carry the suffering of the children. Let us try to feel their pain, feel their despair, and may this disturb us enough to drive us to take action.
Let us promote the idea that nothing — nothing — justifies inflicting pain. Let us promote the idea that all life is sacred and that nothing — nothing — justifies killing someone else. Let us commit to always speak up against violence and promote the understanding that violence will never be an effective way of solving problems.
Let’s together implore, “PLEASE, STOP!”
Let us do something — anything within our power — to bring Heaven to Earth.
Let us promote the idea that this is our Garden and Playground and that all we need to do during our lifetime is to take good care of the Garden, improve the Playground, share our toys, and have a good time together.
Let us promote the idea that we are all playmates who were born to be friends and play together.
Let us become agents of change.
Let us be promoters of peace.
Believe me. We can do it! Let’s do it!
Let’s keep in touch.
