Dear son

Dear son,

Happy birthday!

Be happy! This is what I wish for you.

I start with Howard Thurman’s wisdom, the one advice I have repeated so many times, and that you know so well… “Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive and go do it because what the world needs is people who have come alive.”

DSCN2755

Pedro, you are a fantastic human being. You bring a lot of joy to the world, so start by recognizing that you already have many reasons to be happy.

Be grateful! Be happy!

Fill your days with those things that make you happy. Don’t wait for the future. Many times we abdicate from living and enjoying the present thinking that we will be happier when certain conditions come together in the future. Try not to do that. Live in the present moment, the here-now, and fill it with joy. Here. Now.

Be happy!

Visualize what would make you happier. Think about the people whose lives you admire and ask yourself, “What do I need to do to be my own version of that individual?” After you’ve done that, change the approach, and ask yourself, “What do I need to do to be the best possible version of myself? What do I need to do to be all that I can be?” The truth is that you can only be yourself, so trying to be someone else is a recipe for failure. All you should ask of yourself is for you to be best you. That’s all. And it is enough.

Be you, and remember that we experience a greater happiness when we make others happy. So, continue to do what you are already doing: help others on their journeys. Make them them happy, and you will be happy.

With all my love,

Papai

P.S. And remember that “you get from it what you put into it.”
